What Is a Bunion (Hallux Valgus)?

A bunion is a bony prominence at the base of the big toe that pushes the joint outward and angles the big toe inward toward the other toes. Bunions vary in severity and can cause discomfort, inflammation, difficulty finding comfortable footwear, and changes in toe alignment.
Common factors that contribute to bunion development include:
Genetics: Family history can play a significant role in bunion development, particularly when inherited foot structure or mechanics contribute to abnormal joint alignment.
Improper footwear: Wearing shoes with narrow toe boxes or tight-fitting styles for extended periods may worsen bunion development or aggravate an existing bunion.
Age and gender: Bunions become more common with age and are more frequently seen in women, partly due to differences in footwear choices and foot structure.
What can I do to treat my painful bunion?

Treatment options range from non-surgical to surgical approaches. When I provide medical pedicures in Durham, NC, one of the most common findings I encounter is a painful bunion. My patients often ask how they can prevent a bunion from getting worse or how they can treat it. Unfortunately, once an individual develops a bunion, it is extremely hard to correct without a podiatrist near me performing a surgical correction. That being said, this is usually the last resort, as these surgeries are complicated and, depending on your foot structure and anatomy, can cause more problems down the road. If you are not having pain and simply want to try some at-home remedies to address the bunion, here is what I suggest.
1. Wide Toe Box Shoe

Always wear shoes with a wide toe box. Make sure your toes have enough space to ‘breathe,’ for lack of a better term. A wide toe box shoe does NOT mean just purchasing a “wide-sized” shoe. Look for shoes that are wider at the front, in the toe box area. Millions of shoes would work, but I generally suggest checking out your local running-shoe store. For the best shoe store in the NC Triangle area, I generally recommend Fleet Feet. They're locally owned and have in-store experts who assess the structure and contours of your feet to recommend a shoe that best suits your anatomy. They also have a pressure-mapping surface where they can evaluate your foot width, arch height, and gait pattern. A custom insert may also be suggested to assist with overpronation or supination.
2. Nighttime Braces

Night bracing. I have seen these online, and while I can't attest that they work, it won't hurt to try them, as they may slow bunion progression, help with pain, and improve joint flexibility. You can purchase them relatively inexpensively online.
3. Foot Stretches

Local stretching of the feet and toes can help maintain joint mobility, reduce pain, and improve gait pattern. While stretching will not change the structural misalignment, it can still help with pain control and mobility.
When Should You See a Podiatrist?

A local mobile podiatrist or in-office podiatry group can help if your bunion has become so problematic that it affects your gait and balance or becomes increasingly painful. This can especially increase the risk of falls in older adults. Sometimes a severe bunion deformity can cause overlapping or overriding toes, which can lead to additional pain, callus and corn formation, and instability in your feet.
How Can Mobile Foot Care Help?

If you are an elderly senior looking for in-home mobile foot care services, now is a good time to ask about bunion treatment. At Womble’s Foot Care, PLLC, we provide mobile medical pedicures for seniors and adults throughout the NC Triangle and surrounding areas. During a foot care visit, patients can ask questions about bunions, footwear, pressure points, and general foot health.
A certified foot care nurse will assess your foot and recommend reasonable non-surgical treatment options. If painful calluses or corns develop due to structural changes in your feet, a foot care nurse can reduce them during a mobile medical pedicure to relieve pressure and pain. Based on their clinical assessment and your history, they may refer you to a local podiatrist for further evaluation.
Taking care of your feet starts with understanding your individualized needs. If you or a loved one could benefit from in-home mobile foot care services in the NC Triangle, Womble’s Foot Care is here to help support your foot health and comfort.
