How a Medical Pedicure Can Help

If you’ve ever experienced an ingrown toenail, you know it! You may have noticed throbbing, swelling, redness, or even drainage coming from the edge of your toenail fold.
At Womble’s Foot Care, we frequently help patients throughout the Triangle NC area find ingrown toenail relief through professional mobile medical pedicure services and advanced senior foot care services.
What Is an Ingrown Toenail?
An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin instead of growing outward, causing pain, irritation, redness, and inflammation, and, in some cases can lead to an infection.
An ingrown toenail most commonly affects the big toe but can affect other toes as well. Left untreated a toe infection can occur, especially if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or other chronic health conditions.
What Causes Ingrown Toenails?
Several factors can increase your risk of developing an ingrown toenail, including:
Genetics and inherited nail shape
Thick or curved toenails with or without toenail fungus
Previous toenail injuries or trauma
Chronic swelling in the feet or lower extremities
Tight-fitting shoes
Improper nail trimming techniques
How Should I Cut My Toenails?

Many of my patients ask me how to trim toenails, and they have always heard to trim your nails straight across. While this is a reasonable general guideline, foot care is not always one-size-fits-all and I often have to trim nails using different techniques to fix a longstanding problem or adjust based on my assessment findings.
In my experience, after trimming thousands and thousands of toenails, our medical pedicures are individualized to the needs of each patient- and let me tell you, no two toenails are exactly alike. Some patients have very wide toenails, while others have thick, curved, or impacted nail edges. In these situations, simply trimming straight across may not adequately address pain or prevent future ingrown nails.
Professional foot care focuses on evaluating the individual nail structure and trimming the nail in a way that promotes healthy growth while minimizing pressure on the surrounding skin.
That said, we do not recommend digging into the corners of your nails at home. Cutting nails at sharp angles often makes the problem worse and can increase the risk of developing an ingrown toenail.
For most individuals, trimming the nail along its natural free-edge contour and avoiding aggressive corner cutting is the safest approach.
How a Mobile Medical Pedicure Can Relieve Ingrown Toenail Pain.
A medical pedicure is much different than a traditional spa pedicure. The focus is on foot health, comfort, and prevention of complications.
During a mobile medical pedicure appointment, we carefully complete a lower-extremity assessment, including evaluation of the nail plates, surrounding skin, circulation, and overall foot health. If an ingrown nail is present, we may gently remove the offending nail corner and shape the nail to encourage healthier growth.
Specialized foot care techniques can help:
Relieve pressure and discomfort
Reduce inflammation
Prevent worsening of the ingrown nail
Improve nail growth patterns
Decrease the likelihood of infection
Our toenails grow slowly—approximately 1 millimeter per month. This means it can take up to 1 year for a toenail to fully grow out. For this reason, correcting a chronic ingrown toenail often requires ongoing monitoring and frequent visits to ensure foot health is maintained.
When Should You See a Foot Care Professional?
You should seek professional evaluation if you experience:
Persistent toe pain
Redness or swelling around the nail
Drainage or signs of infection
Recurrent ingrown toenails
Difficulty trimming your own nails
Diabetes, neuropathy, or poor circulation
Early treatment often prevents more serious complications and can help avoid unnecessary pain. To learn more about who can manage an ingrown toenail, check out Foot Care Professionals: What's The Difference?
When to Seek a Podiatrist Near Me?
As a certified foot care nurse, I can generally assist with pain relief for an ingrown toenail. Sometimes, despite my best efforts, the medical pedicure is too uncomfortable in the home setting. In these cases, I usually refer out to a local podiatrist near me to consider a procedure called a matrixectomy.
A matrixectomy permanently removes the portion of the nail root responsible for the recurring ingrown edge. This can provide long-term relief and eliminate the need for repeated treatments.
At Womble’s Foot Care, if we believe a patient would benefit from this procedure, we are happy to recommend referral to a local foot doctor near me for further evaluation.
